Option 1: Keep It Running (Most Condos and Homes With a House-Checker)

1. Set the fridge to 37°F and the freezer to 0°F.
2. Remove perishables; leave water jugs inside to keep temperatures stable.
3. Turn the ice maker off and close the water supply valve behind the fridge. A failed inlet valve or cracked line can leak for months while you're gone, a common cause of condo water damage.
4. Plug into a surge protector rated for refrigerators. Summer is Clearwater's lightning and hurricane season.
5. Put a coin on a frozen cup of water in the freezer. If the coin has sunk when you return, the freezer thawed at some point.
6. Ask your house-checker or condo manager to check the fridge after any storm or outage.

Option 2: Shut It Down

1. Empty the fridge and freezer completely.
2. Turn off the ice maker and shut the water valve.
3. Unplug the unit and let the freezer defrost with towels down.
4. Clean and dry every surface, including the drip pan if you can reach it.
5. Prop both doors open (a towel or door stop works). Closed doors plus Florida humidity equals mold and odors by October.

Before You Leave: 15-Minute Maintenance

• Vacuum the condenser coils; the fridge has to run through a Clearwater summer.
• Check the door gaskets with a dollar bill: close the door on it, and if it slides out easily, the seal is weak.
• Note your model number and keep it in your phone for any remote repair calls.

When You Return in the Fall

1. Check both compartments with a thermometer before loading groceries.
2. Open the water valve, turn the ice maker back on, and replace the water filter; most filters are rated for about 6 months.
3. Throw out the first 2–3 batches of ice.
4. Look under and behind the fridge for water stains or mold.

Don't Forget the Other Appliances

• Garage freezer: empty it or have someone check it after storms; garage heat plus outages is a bad mix.

• Air conditioning: keep it on with humidity control; it protects every appliance from mold and corrosion.
